Grant was born at the intersection of technology and the environment.
Co-founders Triin Uustalu and Kadri Parikas, tech industry experts from Estonia with extensive experience in product development and data analysis, share a deep appreciation for environmental stewardship. During one of their frequent escapes to the outdoors, used as a respite from the digital world, they found themselves increasingly worried about the impacts of climate change.
Research into solutions led them to a surprising discovery about the UK. Despite being a leader in environmental policy and having committed substantial resources to woodland creation and nature recovery, many landowners struggled to access these funds due to bureaucratic complexity.
"We saw a clear disconnect," explains Triin. " While people wanted to contribute towards nature recovery, the process of finding and applying for grants - navigating obscure eligibility criteria and jargon-filled guidance documents – was so daunting/deterring that people gave up.
Recognising a challenge they were uniquely positioned to address, Triin and Kadri founded Glafos in June 2023. They created Grant, an AI-powered assistant that simplifies access to tree-related funding by consolidating information from hundreds of schemes and translating bureaucratic language into clear, actionable advice.
"We're building a bridge," says Triin, "connecting government initiatives with the landowners who can bring them to life."
By making environmental grants accessible at the click of a button, Glafos aims to boost tree planting rates across the UK, contributing to the nation's ambitious climate and biodiversity goals.
